This free workshop will help you keep your septic system and well in good, functioning condition, and introduce you to the important role that shorelines have in our environment.
As part of the workshop, we will use the “Rural Landowner Stewardship Guide for the Lake Scugog Watershed,” which will be provided at no cost. The guide is easy to understand, and contains hands on worksheets which can help you assess your septic system, well and shoreline.

Specific topics we will cover include the following:
Septic Systems:
- Common types of septic systems and how they work
- Assessing the efficiency and function of your septic system
- Ways to keep your septic system working properly
- How to identify problems and what to do if you find one
Wells:
- How often to test the water from your well
- Identifying where your well is in relationship to potential sources of drinking water contamination (such as septic beds)
- How to identify problems with your well
- How to protect your well and ensure good water quality for years to come

Why it’s important to close old, unused wells, and how to do it safely
Shoreline Ecology:
- How shorelines are part of the water cycle
- How a natural buffer can help improve water quality along your shoreline, and contribute to the overall health of your lake or river
